Met Gala 2021 is the main event on the fashion calendar. The Costume Institute Gala took place on September 13 at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art. The party on the occasion of the opening of the annual exhibition brings together the most famous names from the world of art, music, fashion, cinema. Tom Ford, Adam Mosseri and Anna Wintour served as honorary chairmen of the council. Timothy Chalamet, Billie Eilish, Amanda Gorman, Naomi Osaka became co-chairs this year. The broadcast was covered by actress Keke Palmer and comedian and screenwriter Ilana Glazer.
What’s the theme of this year’s Met Gala?
The exhibition’s theme, timed to coincide with the 75th anniversary of the Costume Institute – American fashion – will be divided into two parts.
The first “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion” will analyze a new wave of US designers: Christopher John Rogers, Payer Moss, Conner Ives.
The second, In America: An Anthology of Fashion examines inclusiveness by taking a critical look at the clothing in the museum’s historic halls from a race and gender perspective.
Due to the cancellation of the Met Gala 2020 by the Covid-19 pandemic, the Costume Institute has announced that this year’s exhibition will be divided into two parts. The opening of the first, organized under the slogan “In American: A Lexicon of Fashion”, in tribute to American designers, fashion and culture, took place on September 13. As seen by directors, the second part on American style, “In American: An Anthology of Fashion” will take place on May 5, 2022.
How was the theme of the Met Gala 2021 interpreted by the stars? Although we expected multiple references to the Statue of Liberty, clichéd decorations in the form of stars and the ubiquitous American colours, we must admit that this year’s creations were a pleasant surprise. On the “red”, or rather beige, carpet, we welcomed a whole spectrum of different creations, from Western themes straight from the Wild West, through all versions of nineties denim, to individual interpretations, like in Lili Reinhart’s dress decorated with flowers from 50 states.
