The engine is located at the rear of the car, and the batteries are not located where they were in the previous generation (in the middle of the car between the passenger and driver’s seat). The novelty is designed based on the GA-L platform, which provides a change in the arrangement of fuel cells and transmission units for the most efficient use of space. The result is a more spacious cab and improved chassis balancing.

Particular emphasis was placed on the range. Increased power, a larger hydrogen tank, and improved aerodynamics and fuel efficiency contribute to an increased range of up to 650 km.
The car is equipped with three high-pressure hydrogen fuel tanks, which increased autonomy by 30%.

The tanks have a T-shaped layout. The most extended section is located longitudinally and centrally under the car floor. There is a compartment under the rear seats and trunk for the two smaller tanks. The total capacity of these tanks is 5.6 kg of hydrogen (the volume of the predecessor was 4.6 kg of hydrogen fuel).

A well thought out configuration and redesigned arrangement of the elements of the fuel system allowed for a lower centre of gravity and preservation of cargo space. The new platform also allows the innovative fuel cell to be moved from its current location to the front compartment. At the same time, the high-voltage battery and electric motor can be positioned under the rear axle.

According to the manufacturer, the drivetrain layout has been optimized to provide a 50:50 weight distribution between the front and rear of the vehicle.

Hydrogen tanks have a more durable multilayer design and are characterized by the reduced weight (hydrogen accounts for 6% of the total weight of the fuel and tanks).

Focusing on advanced technology and modernizing every detail allowed Toyota engineers to reduce the weight of the fuel system by 50% and increase power by 12. The vehicle also has an FDC DC / DC converter and modular high-voltage parts. At the same time, their weight decreased by 2.9 kg to 5.5 kg.

An identical approach to reducing size and weight has been applied to other elements of the fuel system. The air intake is adapted for low-pressure losses and is equipped with a sound-absorbing membrane, minimizing noise in the passenger compartment. The exhaust is made of resin pipe and is designed to let in as much air and water as possible. Also, the low noise level in the cabin is due to a more powerful silencer.

Lithium-ion battery

The new Toyota Mirai 2022 uses a lithium-ion high-voltage battery rather than a nickel-metal hydride unit. And although it is smaller in size, its energy consumption and performance are much higher. The power supply also stands out for its improved environmental standards.

The battery contains 84 cells with a nominal voltage of 310.8V (compared to 244.8V) and a capacity of 4.0 Ah. The total weight has been reduced from 46.9 to 44.6 kg. The reduced dimensions of the battery made it possible to install it behind the rear row of seats so as not to take up space in the cargo compartment. A new air cooling technology has also been designed with inconspicuous air intakes on either side of the second row of seats.
